Unlike most major tech companies, Apple does not allow discounting of its products. Regardless of where you purchase your iPod, you will pay the same price. You won't save a few pounds by going to your local discount electronics store. However, there are a couple of exceptions which could save you a handy sum.

• Buy "Refreshed": When you buy an iPod from an Apple Store, you have only 14 days during which it can be returned for a refund. In addition, a "re-stocking fee" of 10% will be deducted from your refund. The good news is that other people will do this, and Apple then re-sells these iPods at a discount which is usually much better than the 10% they charged the previous customer. They call these models "Refreshed", as opposed to "Refurbished", which would be a device which was not working properly and then repaired. "Refreshed" models carry the same full warranty as a brand new iPod. Hint: Buying "Refreshed" can save you big on a Mac, too.

• Subscription Audio Services: One such service is Audible.com, which sells downloadable electronic audio books. For a monthly fee, you can download audio books and other content each month. This service requires no contract, but if you are willing to agree to a one-year commitment, you can get a nice discount on various audio players, including the iPod. This discount is currently $100 US dollars off either the video iPod or iPod Nano.
